Where to start...
  • I need to go through my entire stock and organize them but I have no idea where to even start. I need to figure out my stallions (including the ones that will be made from the RGS) and figure out which mare goes to which line/stallion. It such a daunting task and I know it needs to get done. I just have no idea how to start lol

    Help? lol
  • My advice is to start small. Far too many folks spread themselves too thin. One, maybe two lines are all you really need to start out. Easier that way. You get too many lines, too many generations going at once, and it all gets overwhelming. I would say, pick your best studs, and best mares, from one or two color lines, and retire the rest to showing. Downsize, and the whole thing will seem less crazy.
  • Right now I just have my "plain" liver line, my KP line, and my SNF line. Ideally I'd like to get my KP and SNF line combined. All my RGS stallions will be KP so I can rotate stallions.

I'm not a real fan of my "plain" liver horses unless they're black liver with pangere. I guess with saying that I could end up getting rid of my mares that don't have two kit genes? Or should I keep them (especially the liver foundies) if they have at least 1 kit gene?
  • Snip snip snippity snip

Start with your no kit livers. It's an easy in.

  • If I was you I’d start there trimming down the non black pangere livers.

Open a search sort by colour name liver, must have non pangere, must have kit

    Spay everything that pops up.

I’d also consider gelding the kp and snf boys that only have one kit gene
  • Thank you! I started my snipping spree. Went from 14 pages to 4 pages of foundation mares. I am selling some of the nice non-pointed livers so they don't go to waste.

@Bandit1119 - I like the idea of gelding the one kit gene snf/kp boys! That's next
  • I just did a massive snipping spree in September and ended up getting super tough with my boys genetics. Most of each generation tend to paper as good as their brothers so I first went through and snipped any Ee or Dd boys then looked at kit and snipped all the single kit boys unless they had something extra (axiom, nexus or ice since those I require intact foals to inherit at least one fantasy gene to stay intact) If I still had too many I kept the Sty or StySty boys.

On hj1 I also gelded quite a few of my older studs that get used most often because I recognize the name or like the genes but have others with similar genes. Then I loaded all the mares into the pastures, picked studs and gelded most of the rest of the breedable studs not in a pasture. Reduced my studs by 2/3rds

Pretty sure I started with over 1,300 breeders (looked when I was halfway through my spree so probably more) and ended up with under 1,000
