To SS or not to SS?
  • I participated last year and it was so. much. fun. But it took a lot of time and effort, which I didn't mind at all, but this year I am at a beach hut in Ireland that doesn't have wifi, so I have to hotspot to my computer which uses a ton of data. We are a lot busier this year than we were last year. But I really don't want to miss out on the fun of SS - and this year it would be possible for me to give much better gifts because my show bonus has skyrocketed in the last year.
Alternatively, I could just run a few giveaways on my own during the next couple of months, but that might even be more time consuming than SS because instead of having one giftee I will have lots.
    Decisions!

  • I’m not going to for really similar reasons (anniversary trip to France with the husband from Dec 9-20, then have to go straight back to work when I get home). I will be available to sell gifts, to be an elf and to help out, but I’m not going to actually be a Santa this season because I want to focus on my husband and our trip (especially since we’ve been apart for 8 weeks right now, so we really need to put in that focused time together!).
  • If you don't mind a question from a new player, what all is involved in this site's Secret Santa? I've heard so much about it, but not in any detail!
  • Secret Santa is awesome and fun but youre right a lot of work (if, like most of us, you try really hard and do a lot of gifting!) I would say do some giveaways things if you want and enjoy what youre doing and where you are and dont waste all the data lol. Theres always next year sometimes real life has to take priority!

@sebeth204 The post will be coming out soon that explains everything but you can search "secret santa" in the search bar and look for the previous threads on it.
  • I'll most likely give it a pass this year too. I'll certainly help out if needed though, and I plan on opening my barns and most likely giving away plenty of horses!

    Prices are almost always negotiable.
  • @sebeth204 you send in an entry form listing likes and dislikes in each category you’d like to enter (Usually under 100k and over 100k tho there was talk of adding a higher category) then once the entries have been submitted the organizers send you back the form of another player from each category you’ve signed up for (you can do one or the other or both)

Then you go shopping for the other players likes and try to stay away from dislikes. You can also gift other things (I received a stable banner one year and honestly would love if my under 100k SS were to just send me a list of names for my horde of ID named horses lol)

There’s usually some elves running around helping and they will send notes to your Ss to clarify likes and dislikes or to send anonymous gifts until you reveal yourself.

I usually use a notepad app or document or excel spreadsheet on the computer or my phone to track the names and links to the straws, eggs, embryos , show horses, intact horses and how much I spent so I can make sure to stay over or under the limit.

Then Christmas Eve or day I send a pm and copy and paste the list of names and links to my SS so that they have a master list (minus the price column) to know where they got what from and to go through and buy the horses from me.

Now that there’s buddy chats it’s easier to send horses for $1 but before we would coordinate a time to both be on and the giftee would open the horses page and refresh until the SS sender would put it up for sale.

Many players throw open the virtual barn doors and have huge sales on everything that’s going to your SS. I’ve gotten eggs and straws for pull price or less that regularly sell for 100k normally. I actually find the over 100k difficult to accomplish as people are so generous. If you are actively looking and get lucky you could find hundreds of deals and not even get close to spending 100k.
  • When will SS be due? I will be gearing up for Finals the 18-19 of december and then trying to get back home. Would love to if we had the entire month, but... How much time do we have?
  • I am definitely doing it! But a lot like last year I'll probably do my best, but if it's not over the top I don't mind and am not going to stress.. :)
Ultimately I want to please my secret santa, but I don't expect extravagant, and thus if I end up being too busy (which if I'm honest, I probably won't be!) Than I won't stress myself out over it.
Christmas is about love first and foremost and I think anyone can put their love and intent into something without killing themselves in the process. :D :x

  • I loved Secret Santa last year and was really looking forward to it this year. However, my husband and I are going for a vacation in Dec so I will have to give it a pass. :(. Though I am really excited about my vacation!
  • You’ll have to wait until the announcement for entries is posted. Usually we get the SS names back mid month I think but last year one of the servers took entries earlier and we had longer and it was awesome especially since Ammit did the advent calendar sales for the first year.

I’ve got my fingers crossed that they will run it longer on both sides this year and that the advent calendar will be coming back :D
  • I’m really excited for SS - last year was my first year and I really enjoyed it but I’m hoping to do a better job as a Santa this year by being a little more coordinated (I love the idea of a spreadsheet keeping track of everything because I bought a ton of straws and then couldn’t remember which straws were for my giftee! It’ll also help with keeping track of costs so I can know when I’m reaching the 100k or not - it’s so hard to tell when everyone’s so generous!)
  • I really want to try SS this year. It's my first Christmas and I feel like I'm not anywhere near as advanced as other players that started in January. I really wouldn't want to disappoint anyone.
  • I had planned to do SS this year as always. It is so much fun gifting to my recipient.

However, my husband and I will be moving starting Dec. We are moving into a small two bedroom house right on the BEACH, to be able to help my sister out. Her room mate is graduating college and moving back home.

It is going to be a slow process, since my husband collects things. (Yeah, he is a hoarder in his garage.) So I probably won't even be able to decorate this Christmas. I may put up a few things outside is all.

I like to really give a lot of gifts to my recipient, and won't have the time with packing and moving things. I will also be passing on participating this year, but will be available for anyone that needs GP for their SS. I may do a contest or something after we get moved as a New Years gifting.
  • @Amgr1992 I wouldn’t worry too much about not being as advanced as everyone else. I have a fairly large barn but have yet to really be able to pull things from my own barn other than show horses because my SS’s typically breed opposite genetics than I do.

I found it helps me learn more about genetics to because I have ended up researching different genes I don’t keep in my own barn to see how they react so that I knew what I should look for to get gifts.
  • Thank you @Bandit1119! I still want to do this, I had a massive amount of studs and mares that I just culled not to long ago I have under 25 studs and under 20 mare but this will give me something to focus on!
  • @PaintsStables we will be in similar accommodation :) we are also in a VERY small two bedroom house on the beach!

  • I'm in for sure. :)
  • @CWScowgirl87, I love it down at the beach. My sister has lived there for 20 years. So we always got to visit, but now we get to live there.

I have always lived way out in the country, lots of trees, forest, and snow. (I love snow!) It took some getting used to, living in a small city. I still really miss the quiet, fall colors, (Seasons), snow, and cleaner air, with the smell of hay, fresh shavings, and the smell of a stable full of horses. But, if I have to live in the city now, at least it is at the beach!
