Sorrel tobiano
  • Is it likely to get a sorrel tobiano from a black overo stud and a bay tobiano mare? Sky is that sorrel tobiano but his full sister was born a black minimal tobiano. Bay is black based so is it just a rarity for a sorrel to be born from black based parents?
  • If your stud is black you know that his genotype is E? aa. Your mare is bay so hers is E? A?. Your colt is chestnut (sorrel) so his genotype based on phenotype is ee ??. Since he had to get an e from each parent you know that both parents must be Ee. Since these two also produced a black filly E? aa, you know the dam must be Aa. So, in short.
    Sire: Ee aa
    Dam: Ee Aa
    Colt: ee ?a
    Filly: E? aa

You had a 25% chance of getting a chestnut from this pair. So not really rare. You had a 37.5% chance of a black and also a 37.5% chance for a bay.

If you're really interested in this I suggest looking up punnet squares. Very helpful in determining genetic probability.
  • I am getting more and more interested in horse genetics. Is there away for me to find out if my colt is carrying a cream gene. His dam is my sons palomino Shetland pony. With this being my studs last colt I am not sure if I want to geld him.
  • If hes the red and white pinto you shared in your post about him, he doesnt carry a cream gene :)
If he did he would be a palomino
  • Yeah he is the one. I knew it might be a long shot. I don't anymore of my studs foal except now for Orion. I know all of Sky's other colts were gelded. I am leaning more on keeping him intact.
  • If I were you I would keep him intact, unless he becomes an issue

  • He is something special. He is being registered with International quarter pony association. They only require one parent to be registered. If he gets to my height I will be so happy. Sire is 15 2 hands and dam is 11 hands. I am hoping He gets to 13 hands perfect for a 5ft 1in lady.
