Real life Genes Please help.
  • So I’ve recently purchased a black mare, and I was wondering how to make sure she has a Grullo foal?

This is what I know about my mare Diamond’s genetics. I will probably never gene test her. But I would like to know if there’s any possible way to make sure she throws a Grullo.

    Diamond is black
    -Her Dam (Sapphire) is brown/black
-her sire (Quin)is Bay and is proven to be Ee

Sapphire is brown/Black (it looks like she has Pangere on her flanks and muzzle)
-dam is brown and she threw a Black and Bay foal when paired to Quin.
-sire (Justice) is Bay, he threw a flaxen chestnut as well Shaphire.

    Quin is a Bay
He’s thrown Bay, Black, and chestnut.
    -His dam is black
    -His sire is Bay

    Justice is Bay
-Dam was a light yellow chestnut
    -Sire black

Any feedback would be very welcome.
  • She is probably E? aa. Your best chance of getting a Grullo foal is to breed her to a grullo or a bay dun stallion. If the sire has been tested DD, then your chances would be fairly good of at least getting a dun, whether grullo or bay dun. If he hasn't been tested, all bets are off as to whether he will pass on his dun. Since we don't know if she's homozygous or heterozygous black, there's some uncertainty there as well. She might pass on recessive e.

    At least that's my guess.

  • Okay. It would help if her mother was bred again, but that won’t happen any time soon unless its a oopsy baby.

If I was able to breed her to a EE DD stud would that make the chances of getting a grullo better?

And if she has an A from her sire will she have a 1/4 chance of a Bay Dun show up?
  • Best chance for a Grullo foal, breed to a stallion that is Grullo! Plus you guarantee a grullo foal if he is homozygous dun, and homozygous black (EE). Your mare could carry chestnut, you won't know without testing. She's black, so won't have dominant Agouti (A)
  • Thank you so much guys. Now to find a stallion that’s tested, and within my price range. Wish me luck because I’ll probably need it. :)
  • For your best change breed to a grullo stud that at is EE DD
