Naming foals
-
How do you come up with them? I can't think of good names. Any suggestions on how to name 39 foals?
-
I name breeder foals some variation on the combination of their parents names. For show ponies I might use book or movie titles Or characters, song or album titles or more recently, a list of adjectives in alphabetical order on the internet.
Some of my lines have names in different languages--I have a line anchored by a stallion named for a Lord of the Rings elf so I use an online Tolkien Elven language dictionary for some of that line. I also had a stallion named Uluru Reflections and have an online dictionary to a dialect of Aboriginal language I use for some of his offspring. -
Most of the time I try to do s combination of the sire and dam. I hit a block.

yea if you have a lot of foals it can be hard sometimes to come up with names lolCelestial Performance Horses

A lot of my horse go Un named until they're of breeding age (especially if they were foals out of pasture) then I usually try to combine the parents names and if I can't think of anything I try to go with a theme.
I showed you my filly Qualupalik. Her line is named after monsters from different cultures.
I've seen horses named after foods. I've used an entire book series, common phrases, song lyrics.
One of my stallions is called "the Blue Dragon" so his foals have names based in fantasy or the color blue
The possibilities are endless yet seem so limited @-)----

Think outside the box on your sire and dam names. If they are Blue Rocket and Red Valentine, think alternative meanings/words for all 4 words. Or think Purple because that's what red and blue make together. It gets hard, especially if your Foundation names are simple.
I've learned over the last calendar year to give my stallions in particular names with lots of depth. For instance, Mood Indigo is the name of a Frank Sinatra song, a way to say "feeling blue", and Indigo is both a color and a crop. Just using the Sinatra angle I can find new names for days for his foals.
Google is your friend! -
I start with horse name websites and scroll through suggestions till I see something I like or I see something that inspires something else. After that I use the parents names.

There are also a bunch of horse name generators on the internet.
Google 'Pet Horse Name Generator'. You have to scroll down a tiny bit, but they show you a list and you can click male or female to get more.
Or Google 'Horse names - Random'
I have a list of over 2000 names that I have come up with over the years. I hear a phrase, or a band name, or a book title and think "oooo, that would be a great horse name!". Then I write it down and add it to the list. I also get ideas from dog show programs/catalogs etc. Lots of times, though, something just pops into my head and it works!

I usually try to do a combination of the parents names or something related. But I also hit blocks especially when I'm going fast so sometimes I just use phrases from the song I'm listening to in that moment or do something totally random lol.

i sometimes scroll through Pinterest for name ideas if i cant come up with one on my own, i have a whole board there with horse pictures in it and i'll look through there when im stuck on what to name a horse lolCelestial Performance Horses

When I first started playing a year ago, I tried to name all my mares after flowers and my boys were whatever first came to mind. That worked when I had a small number of ponies. Now that I have a rather large herd, I use fantasynamegenerators.com
I particularly like the Inheritance Cycle. The fillies get Elf names and the colts get Dragon names :)Thanked by 1Wildland Acres -
Cool I will have to give that a try.

I pretty much do the same thing as Moon. All my foundations and show ponies get names from the lyrics of whatever song I'm listening to. And then breeding stock I try to keep it related to the parents name. I've also started trying to give my studs longer more in depth names so there's more to work with. Also I have a number of horses that look just like horses I know irl and thus get named after them.
Cheers, my 2g benchmark is out of Uluru Reflections!
For my axiom line I'm planning on naming all the homozygous foals after stars!
