How do you pick who is gelded and who is left?
-
The new Holiday Herd Helpers just got me thinking about this. Being a new stable, my earnings from showing are not huge just yet, so having lots of geldings and spayed mares is ideal. When I first started, I created two stallions with the Great Show horses tattoo who both went on to pass all their testing. I bred them to some of my mares and got three colts, one of which was gelded. I also got a stallion who has the benefit of the Bring Back the Sun tattoo, making him a perfect foundation I believe? So at this point, would you geld the two 'great show horse' stallions and us their sons and the new stallion? I'd put them up for stud, but I don't think they would bring in anything substantial enough to make it worth wild. I've included links to them all if anyone is curious!

The two from the Great Show Horses herd helper will definitely have a PT test of 9.9, meaning they will be good at showing. They appear to have passed Gelding Advice and SAT (?), so they will be okay as breeders, but there's no guarantee that they will be as good as a perfect foundation for breeding. It wouldn't hurt to geld them since they've given you intact sons to start your breeding string for the second generation. They are young enough to get lots of the benefit neutering gives horses in training.
The Bring Back the Sun stallion is an Exceptionally Perfect horse. That means he has a PT score of 10.4, as good at showing as a pretty good 2nd generation horse, and would paper B (ordinary create stallions always paper C if they pass Gelding Advice) so he will be as good at breeding as a good 2nd gen. Do show your breeding stock as well as the neuters. They can also do very well in the show ring, and this one definitely should. He will also be perfectly consistent, meaning his show score will be exactly the same each time you show him.
At least, that's what I would probably do at your stage of the game. How you run your stable is completely up to you.
Not all of the Rank Special horses are exceptional producers or Exceptionally Perfect. Some are just Perfect Foundations. If they are exceptional in any way, it will be noted in the description of the Rank Special.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

Yeah okay and even though they passed the gelding testing and SAT, they could still be slightly below their showing 'score' for producing then. Both their comments from the SAT was that they could go either way, but that was said for pretty much all my horses so I didn't think much of it. I think that considering I've got second gen studs from them and the fact the Bring Back The Sun stallion is an exceptional producer and therefore automatically 'better' it would probably be better to geld them and show them. All my breeding stock gets shown as well, but the training boost from the altered horses is always nice lol
I realized that not all the Rank Special horses are not the exceptional producers (couldn't remember what it was called lol), like the mare I made from the one yesterday didn't have that, so I'm assuming she is just a perfect foundation then, or are her stats random like a normal create? -
You're right. Yesterday's Rank Special made Perfect Foundations.
I apologize if you were upset about my explanations including things you already knew. I tend toward thorough explanations most of the time, and so probably end up giving too much information.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

No I wasn't upset at all! Sorry if I came off that way! I was just confirming my understanding of what you'd said lol I'd much prefer things explained thoroughly, cause more often than not I might not be correct in what I think I know xD Thank you so much for your help and I'm sorry if I came across as stuck up!

Because the BBTS stallion is an exceptionally perfect, breeding him to your regular foundation mares will probably result in a lot of altered horses. His stats are basically that of a gen 2. If your goal right now is to make lots of nice show ponies this would be a good way to get some. However, if you're trying to get some intact gen 2 breeding stock you might want to try something different. We'll be getting 10 more rank specials over the next ten days, so you might consider if one of those is a perfect foundation making it a stallion to use with your regular foundation mares. If the rank special is a exceptionally perfect or exceptional producer you might want to make it a mare to use with your BBTS stud. There's no wrong way to go about it, it just depends on your breeding goals.

As you are a small stable, I would suggest not gelding your BBTS stallion. If you don't want him there are many players that will pay far more than create prices for him intact. Selling Rank specials helped me financially when I first started, though keeping them helped me breeding wise because they are better than many other created horses and ofter have rare genes on them.
-
Also, if you have a rank special herd helper that you're not sure you'll keep, try making a mare. They almost always sell for more.
-
No I'm definitely not gelding the BBTS stallion :) I've got him up for public stud now as I don't have any more mares to use with him, but I'll keep in mind about using him with the regular foundation mares. I have a couple of perfect foundation mares, so I am assuming they would be better to use or even finding some second gen mares, or is that a no go? I will make the next exceptional producer a mare so then I've got a pair if worse comes to worst :)
And thanks for the tip about selling the rank specials! I would not have thought the mares sold for more lol On Horse Eden eventing, its the opposite haha -
Mares don't usually sell for more, but they are more likely to sell....most experienced players know when they are going to need a special stallion so we usually don't end up needing to buy them. But Rank Special mares are almost always in demand, especially right around a creation event. As we get a few weeks out from the event, it may get harder to sell even rank Specials, especially if they don't have any "special" genes or patterns, and they may go from commanding 25 or 30k each to only 5 or 10. I would also note that they are almost always more valuable when they are 4 years old or younger and have no living offspring, because at that point they can still be GMTd if the new owner desires (Genetic Modification Treatment--you can change up their color and pattern a bit in the lab!).
But yeah, a lot of us have been saving our hbs for weeks or even months for this couple of weeks because it's just a smorgasbord of rank specials and present buying and receiving and topping up our pastures with tons of high quality new mares.
By the way, a good work around for your BBTS stallion is to use him in the pasture with foundation mares that have the full pasture bonus. If no one has explained that to you yet, ask and we can give you the important points, but basically it means the mares will produce foals only from the top end of their breeding ability range (it doesn't affect the stallion at all). You may not get quite as many intact foals as you would if you used a stallion that had he same breeding quality as your mares, but you would get more than if you just hand breed and what you get will be pretty top notch! -
Ah okay, that makes sense! I'll keep that in mind for if there are any I will sell, but so far I've kept them all lol The rank special helpers are super cool!
I have a couple mares I have put into the pasture but I don't know if they will have the full bonus. They need to be in there for a full month don't they? But that is a good idea for season after next! -
The full bonus is 30 days but my understanding is they get some bonus for any time they spend in the pasture, so you would get a partial bonus when you breed them in January.
