I'm pretty sure you have to have an upgrade to use tattoos. When you have an upgrade you can get to the tattoo registry and make your own design, or have someone make one for you. They are really tiny, 8 bit type images. People use them for all kinds of reasons. You can sort using the tattoos, so my 2g horses all have the same tattoo, and my S+ horses have a different tattoo. I have one that reminds me that a horse has the genes that might create a lethal white foal....etc.

This guy has 4 tattoos. My fleur de lis in purple to show that he is a rank special, which also means he is a foundation. The pastel-ish fleur de lis that tells me he has satin, and the broken heart that tells me to be take precautions when breeding him. There is a 4th one that is harder to see, it's just a tiny X and an P that is underneath the purple fleur de lis...that tells me he is a exceptionally perfect create. I don't like tattoos on the horses body, but you can put them on the cheek, sholder, withers, hip, and thigh as well. You can also place them on inside of the horses lip. You can't see those on the picture, but you can still use them to sort your horses.

Daily herd helpers all have a tattoo as well, the tattoo and it's name are listed on the page.

There are also tattos that show which GMTs have been used on a horse. On this horse you can tell that I added pearl, took out the appaloosa, made him chestnut, and added a mystery gene (in this case KP). The silver star is to show that he was a Diamond Age rank special.

Lol...I have some that I really love seeing on the body--my GP rooster and my KP tiger lily are favorites. And then I have others I don't really like on the body at all, like my Nexus archery target and my Sooty+ cottonwood tree. It's only an issue on this girl because I'm going to have to make another tattoo Model...
