Am I getting this right?
-
I was just about to test my biggest pasture when I remembered that most of the mares in there are TNPs. It seems to me that I can probably save some hbs by NOT testing TNP and PF mares. Wouldn't they be most likely to paper Red? (I had already PT tested most of the TNPs, but, again, why not save the hbs and not test for things I already know!)
For the most BASIC of breeding suggestions we could say that when we have a horse that has been tested for everything we should probably match mares and stallions in 3 areas: AFPT scores (mares and stallions should be fairly close to each other), papering scores (same as AFPT scores) and check for lethal white. ETA: Oh, and match generations if possible, but not a deal breaker.
I've been pretty pleased at the way my culling has gone. The stallions (only 2, I think) that got the snip were my 'sentimental saves', horses that I knew wouldn't pass, but kept them for emotional reasons (lesson learned - only get attached to the good ones! =)) ) and some that I bought for prices that seemed pretty cheap at the time, or were mares culled from someone elses herd that I wanted to give a chance with my stallions.
Now I'm going to give my clicking thumb a rest! Ammit, I don't know how you don't have carpal tunnel! -
I would think you are right. I am not certain.that is a good question for ammit.

I didn't think PT scores mattered for breeding? For my 1st Gens, I don't look at them at all for the mares.
Edit to add - So far all of my PF and TNP mares have papered red. So have all of my 1st Gen mares that passed Strict Breeding Advice though. -
@Kinetic - That seems to be correct. I still have some papering left to do, but so far every Gen 1 mare that I have tested, that had previously passed SMA/strict breeding advice, has papered red. I was wondering why I had no yellow intact mares. I do not have a big enough sample size, so I may have some, just not found yet.

I had several yellow Foundation mares, and a couple 2Gs and, amazingly, one 3G yellow mare!

Yikes!De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."
