Getting excited!
-
My Shetland mare hits 330 days gestation tomorrow and has a decent start to her udder! She is my only Shetland, my others are all minis, so pretty excited to see what she has. Baby is by a Hall of Fame and Pony of the Year stallion. Should be fun :D
-
Are we allowed to post pics?
-
Yes, just not gigantic humongous ones.
and may I add that you had BETTER post pics! Pony babies! ooooo! -
Congrats. My sons Shetland pony mare Gidget had her foal last year. Orion will turn 1 year old officially on July 25. His sire is my APHA gelding now Sky. Orion has2 blue eyes. I have high hopes for him both as ashiw horse and a stud.
-
Thanks! This is my mare and I'll be sure to share baby pics too!
-
Wowza, she is gorgeous! I have to say that back in the day I remember thinking that minis were just plain ole ponies - thick heads and necks, basically thick everything, but they sure as heck have gotten REALLY refined over the years! Hard to tell they aren't big horses except for the background to emphazise their size!
-
Thanks and yes they definitely aren't clunky Lil things anymore although they do get fat on air so have to watch their diets closely!
-
She is gorgeous.
-
"they do get fat on air"
Hahaha
When I was a teenager I worked at a fancy-schmancy mini farm and I remember thinking feeding time was the funniest and most ridiculous thing.
They legitimately had me use a produce scale to measure EXACTLY 1/2lbs to 2lbs per horse! (Growing up with full size horses and XL horses it was just mind boggling)
And same with the grain, some of them got 1/8 cup of grain.. Like, what's even the point at that little mouth-full taste-tester bite?
Never will I underestimate a ponies ability to get chubby.
She is SO pretty! I can't wait for baby pictures!ID# 2353 -
Did she foal yet?
-
Nope, dragging along to make sure I go crazy first lol...getting a bit better udder development though so getting closer
-
Awesome i am watching this thread closely for news.
-
That's the prettiest Mini I ever saw.
-
She is a mini Shetland, registered with both :)... 37"Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms

Hope this is ok to post @Ammit but if anyone wants to help watch my mares and see them foal, they are on marestare http://marestare.com/fcam.php?alias=maplehollow
-
Look! I love marestare! Its been ages since I watched! Has she not foaled yet?
-
Nope, still driving me crazy...she is the middle stall
-
Very true!
-
@friesianpaints Hopefully soon a new kid will be on the block! Loving watching MareStare, thank you for the linkAztecArabians

Hmm... Almost looks like there is something going on....?
Hard to tell, because the picture keeps skipping for me (my internet SUCKS), but the one in the middle is down, and looks like she might be straining? And the one on the left is very interested in her. -
Still pg lol, just a warning for anyone watching that she will drive you crazy....acts uncomfortable, gets up and down, lots of tiny piles, ect...and then she falls asleep lol
-
That reminds me of my mums dogs. The most recent one, Sabine (called Bean) decided to have her puppy while me and mum were at a show 6 hours away. The thing about Bean is she loathes any males while in labour and the first few days of having the new baby.....there were only males left at the house.
Pregnant females ALWAYS seem to give birth either when you aren't ready, or when you've just shot out for something. I've found that dark quiet rooms with no other animals helps but, then again, that is with the dogs.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

@Obsidian You are absolutely right! They LOVE waiting for the most inconvenient moments to go into labor. One of my dairy goat does was due to kid and I kept checking on her every 1-2 hours. She showed no signs of labor whatsoever. Very small bag, no loose tendons, and she was completely calm. Figuring she was just going to hold out on me I went up to the house to put together some more supplies and bring them back down to the barn. I was gone no longer that 35 mins and when I came back down she had quintuplets laid out in a line. So now I'm running around like a fool trying to get these babies cleaned up and warm, that day we had one of our infamous March blizzards. All five survived although I did pull 2 of them to bottle feed as special show babies. Moral of the story, don't trust sneaky pregnant does!
-
I have the mare stare window in popup so I can still play the game and watch her. Shes just laying down at the moment, occasionally putting her tiny nose on her giant belly but still interesting to someone who has never been around a heavily pregnent Shetland before XD----

Glad you are enjoying watching her :)...it is interesting to watch the mares behavior when we aren't there even when not bred lol...I figure she is waiting for it to get cold again instead of when it was so nice out.
They really do seem to know when we aren't watching, I'll make sure and update if she starts looking more ready in her udder and such too :)Thanked by 1AztecArabians -
Awesome.

LOL @Confluence Farms, I was thinking the same thing every time this post popped up and there was still no foal :))♡ ID #23495 ♡

Roflmao @Confluence ... definitely communicating with April lol... glad someone got to see my amazing chore outfit lol (ugh)Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms

Sigh...I'm convinced at this rate my mini mares ate going to end up foaling first! Lol
-
Seems like it....did you get multiple matings in? My mum makes a list of all the matings on a given girl so that she knows roughly the range of when to expect labour. I don't quite know how breeding is done with the horses (well, I KNOW know, but not the management stuff).Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

I bought success in foal and got the dates from the breeder. Shetlands I've been told tend to go longer. The tricky thing with minis is they can go anywhere from around 300 days to a year! Horses aren't as easy as other animals as they really don't follow the rules lol and can vary greatly on how long they carry. Plus some bag up normally before foaling so we pretty well know when they are ready, but others finish bagging after or during foaling so make it harder to know.
-
Damn, thought that may help. At least dogs and people have a couple of weeks between the due date when they could go into labour.
At least you know she's not having a "false pregnancy"...with dogs they can drive you nuts, especially the small ones who tend to have singletons.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

Still no baby?!
Just took a peek at her and she was moving around quite a lot. But then the camera (or my phone/crapping service) starting getting dark and static-y with lines everywhere....which was to creepy so I noped out if there :\"> :-\"----

Still no baby and yes my camera is being wonky today...I think the stinking birds are messing with the connections in the barn....going to try to fix it when I do choresThanked by 1AHayesHorses

Well success is still holding out but a mini mare is looking promising. Didn't think she was due yet but apparently settled on the first heat she was covered
-
I watched the middle mare for nearly 2 hours tonight, and she got up and down at least 3 times, poking at her belly and doing odd things with her tail! Now the little stinker is standing in the middle of her stall just dreaming away like nothings going on! You REALLY need to re name her to April The Giraffe!
-
I have April the giraffe in one window and your mares in another. After all this watching I'll bet they have their babies when I go to bed (or when the power goes out lol)♡ ID #23495 ♡

Lol yep, enough to drive you crazy! Success is now on the left, Dreamin is in the middle getting close, and vineyard is on the right (ready to go anytime based on her full udder and dripping milk)
-
That must be the tiniest blanket I have ever seen. Was that Vineyard that foaled?
-
Baby :x :x hopefully the other two smell how good the baby is and push out their own :D♡ ID #23495 ♡
~Specialising in Quality Snowflake, Watercolour & Mushroom Drafts~ -
Vineyard foaled and we had our dates right, she was not due yet and baby was way too premature and didn't make it. He was so tiny the size of a cat and hardly any hair. Was born with cord wrapped tightly around his abdomen and vet says that is likely why he was born early
-
So sorry Fresian. It is hard to lose them. Hopefully the others foal with no problem.
-
@friesianpaints, my deepest condolences for your loss. I pray that the others foals and mothers are healthy and strong. :(
