Real life showing
  • So my cousin has decided we're taking our Tb and her 2 dogs showing tomorrow (5/4/17) up near Newcastle. She's riding and i'm left with showing the dogs. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO DO! She's explained that with her standard poodle I just have to be holding the lead and he'll do it himself but she has a 9 month old greyhound who doesn't know what to do and i'm to enter her into some class (I think its working dog). Showing isn't my thing, I like agility, showjumping, cross country and hacking.

Any hints or tips on how to help present myself and the unruly pup would be brilliant.

I'm meeting her at the show ground with the dogs in the morning and won't see her at all today so i'm coming to you lot for help. If i can find a pic of the dogs i'll post it to show you what i have to deal with.
  • Its not showing up for me but if you right click and open in new tab you can see the devil dogs.

  • If it's breed showing I can help lots! I have about 10 years experience in the breeding showing world and have shown many breeds.

First thing you do is find your rings and what time you'll roughly be on. Your friend should have the numbers and, if not, you'll get them at the show. When you're about to go in tell the steward it's your first time. With the greyhound, don't worry about anything and just have fun! Talk to the dog a lot and don't worry where you place. Try and be calm when standing still, and excited when moving. Spend quite a bit of time with them, especially the younger one. Going for a run before hand is also a good idea as it'll burn off some of their energy and make them more manageable.

While waiting (showing is like 90% waiting isn't it?) Watch other people show to get an idea of what will be asked of you when you go in.

  • Odd pot (poodle) knows his job so I'm confident with him, Luna is a lunatic. From what she's told me it's a mix of both with the dogs, the TB is doing RoR (which he'll fail because he likes space between his back hooves and the ground at shows). I know Odd Pots' classes are first so that will calm my nerves and hopefully give me some practice for when i have to take the lunatic in.
  • Showing went well yesterday, for me, Odie got 2 2nds and a 1st, Luna got 3 1sts. JD the TB decided he was a rodeo horse and not a showing horse so he didn't even place. He did get a special for the 'have a go' showjumping, I feel awful though because he is a showjumper/3 day eventer so it wasn't really anything testing for him. Still a fun day to be had by all.
  • Thats interesting a dog show and a horse show at the same place? Seems like it could be a bit chaotic lol

  • @MoonAcre it's quite a common thing here. One field for warm up and show ring, another smaller field for dog show. It's mainly local and county shows that do this, not many of the bigger ones do. My favourite show to go watch is The Great Yorkshire, everything competes there
  • Hey, they let the CATS show at Westminster this year! Pffft!

  • A follow up on what Confluence said, I've been to a dog show where there was also a cat show! It was held at a pet expo, and there were also horses there. But it was terrible, where the placed us....If you tried to move you were essentially in your neighbours space! And due to this the area between the tarps where everyone sets up for grooming and waiting and the rings was small, which led to the public sometimes blocking people from getting into the rings....

  • What?! I have never heard of cat shows but assumed they existed. Cats competing at a dog show though, ridiculous. I'm going to assume by Westminster you don't mean London and it's somewhere in America.

Oh dear, that sounds dreadful. This was a really well organised show, I was lucky that I was between classes and I got to see JD throwing himself around. like an idiot.
