  • So I know a few people here breed rabbits and I know this is such a supportive community so I thought I'd share my current situation. My mom called me last night to tell me that one of my mini lops (the one I've had the longest) was barely moving to the point she thought he was dead and he hadn't eaten anything. This morning she said he had eaten and drank a little but was still not moving very well. She took him to the vet because she wanted to know what was wrong as soon as possible and it's not good. She said he's in critical condition. His body temperature is extremely low and he has pneumonia and digestive issues. Treatment is going to cost well up to $300 for him. My dad said to go ahead with the treatment because he didn't want me to hate him :x If it had been any of my other 12 rabbits, I would have told them to put it down but Theo is so important to me. I know to some people he's just a rabbit but he is literally the world to me. He's my baby and the thought of losing him absolutely kills me. =(( He's still at the vets right now and their main concern is getting his temperature back up before they treat the pneumonia. They said he'll need to stay inside and be hand fed for a while until he's better.
  • I feel for you, I have had rabbits that I dearly loved and you get just as attached to them as you do a dog or cat. Pneumonia is treatable when caught in time. The weather this year with all it's colds and hots seem to cause cases of pneumonia and unfortunately rabbits don't show very many symptoms until they are very sick. It is not at all unusual for me to bring a cage and rabbit into the house for rehab and treatment or because they have a little and the weather has taken a sudden turn for the worse.
My family is used to it and honestly they are the same way. My son went out in the middle of a horrible thunderstorm to rescue 2 litters of Netherland Dwarfs. He had been told not to go out in the storm, but being my child he did anyway. It was a good thing because the litters had water standing in their nest boxes and there is no way they would have survived. We spent the next couple of hours making sure the rabbits were good and dry and they spent the remainder of the winter in his bedroom.
All of our rabbits come up to the front of the cage for pets when they are fed and watered. They have no fear whatsoever and love to be petted. I rig a carrying cage with a heat lamp over it for warmth and feed our sick bunnies a warm mash of pellets and electrolytes. It has pulled through some that I wasn't sure would make it.
I don't blame your parents a bit for the decision to treat your rabbit, I would have made the same decision if it were one of my kids rabbit. We just spent over $440 on our little dog and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Furbabies are part of the family :)
  • My parents are so amazing for even taking him to the vet for me. My dad doesn't even like my rabbits so the fact that he gave the go ahead for the treatment makes me so happy. It's hard being 9 hours away from home when this is happening. But anyway, Theodore is home now :) Thank God. He's still not out of the woods yet but he's doing much better. His body temperature is back to normal and he was eating a bit. He has special food that he has to have given to him through a syringe and he needs 20 syringe fulls a day. He also has an antibiotic he needs twice a day and a steroid type med that he needs once a day. He drank some water from his bottle which is good. He gets to stay inside until he's better. Right now we're just hoping he makes it through the weekend. If he pulls through, then once he's well enough to travel, my mom is going to see if she can bring him down here to me so I can look after him.
  • Oh, good to know he's better! Your dad may not like the rabbits, but he sure loves you!

I know how those animal attachments get you! And being away at school is SO tough! I can't remember how many animals we snuck into the dorms! And I lost a dog when I was in school, she got me through high school, and it broke my heart that I couldn't be there for her at the end!

Sometimes I get annoyed when I have both cats crawling on my lap (and laptop) and both dogs trying to get my attention, but then I think about life without them and it brings me back to the moment and what is important right now!

  • @ConfluenceFarms I have the benefit of being in an apartment since my college doesn't have dorms, so I get to have animals :D I've had rabbits (including a pregnant one that had 6 babies) every semester but this one (this is my last semester so I need to focus). My sister's dog is the only animal we have right now though. (And yes, my dad loves me :) He knew how important Theo is to me and I've got him wrapped around my finger O:-) I think it comes from being the baby of 4 kids)

  • As the oldest of 3, may I just say "Harumph"!

  • I am glad Theo is doing better :)
As a parent I can tell you that our children's pain is much worse than our own and we will do whatever we can to help them. You can tell your Dad feels the same way. Good luck in your studies, though I am sure you will do well :)
