Couple Color Questions
-
I've been trying to learn all about recognizing DP and other hidden genes. I'm getting the hang of it, but I had two chestnuts throw the liver chestnut filly below. Unfortunately, she papered yellow but I'm trying to figure out where the DP came from.
I'm guessing it's from the dam, since the sire would be liver if he had DP. Is that correct?
Rue de la Course
And, the mare below must have some additional hidden gene, given how red she is. Is she also Hetero DP? Or, is that another gene?
FR Delight PF -
Yes, your filly's dam must have one copy of DP. If it was two she'd also be a liver!
And I would guess your Delight has DP.
This thread below has some examples of DP in bays.

You are correct in saying that your liver foal's dam has DP, and I can confidently say that she is heterozygous for DP, since she has one SSty but isn't liver.
It seems you already know this but I'll add it just in case! DP is a darkening gene like SSty and works with SSty to create liver. For a liver to appear, there needs to be three present darkening genes, typically two SSty and one DP but sometimes one SSty and two DP. If the horse has four darkening genes, so homozygous for SSty and DP, it is a black chestnut.
As for your bay horse, I don't believe she carries DP. As I recently learned, DP darkens traditional bay like it does for chestnut. The blood bay coat color comes from DP affecting wild bay (A+), which your horse doesn't have.
And for your last question on hetero DP being a separate gene from DP, it's not! Hetero would just mean heterozygous, also shortened as het, which means the horse only carries one copy of that gene. Homozygous, often abbreviated hom or hz, means the horse carries two copies of the gene. -
Awesome! Looks like I've got a handle on the DP in chestnuts.
That thread on DP in bays is definitely helpful! The blood bay mare is classic bay underneath but has no Sty. My mare is very similar to the Cheer's 3 An Acceptable Time, but looks even redder. -
Though if Cheers says that the horse is probably DP, it's probably DP, she knows much more than me lol!

Fracasse--most truly red "blood bays" on this game are DP wild bays as you say. DP on non-sooty regular bays seems to create redder coats than just a regular bright bay...when I start breeding again I'm going to really work on breeding DP bright bays as well as DP dark bays and DP wild bays. I love all three!

Very interesting! I agree with you, Cheers - I really like the red blood bays. I've seen quite a few, but this one is quite red!
Thank you!
