Show Prospects Question
  • I was wondering what PT "scale" you go off of per generation to determine which foals will be good show prospects.

Right now I am primarily breeding foundations and a few 2g horses.

Depends on your personal standards but for me I do it like this
    Foundation-9.5+
    2g-10+
    3g-10.5+
    4g-10.8+
    5g-11.2+
    6g-11.4+
    7g-11.6+

  • Personally, being fortunate enough to have been playing long enough not to worry about my stable's finances, I don't set any particular PT expectations for foals when I'm breeding. I don't usually keep 2nd gen or higher horses with PT scores below 9.0, although I sometimes keep neutered foundations with PT's into the 8's. In higher generations, I pay attention to Average Foal PT scores to determine whether a horse remains intact, but I don't set an absolute limit. I have found that hoarding pixel ponies and regularly showing all that aren't in pastures benefits my bank balance enormously.

I searched my lined neuters by PT score and find two at the end with PT's in the 7's. The last horse on the list is a 15 year old with a PT score of 7.4. She has 764.5 points, so she's adding something to my showing bonus, even if it's not a huge amount. Her profit is a positive 414 hbs, so I'd say that she has been worth keeping. She's currently showing in the middle of 5 Local, and still gains a few points with each show. She does her share to keeping my showing bonus high enough to purchase new barns as needed with game money.

Other players are much stricter than I am about this, so I hope they will come and explain their systems.

  • With me, I think that say, a 10.7 5th gen (although parents are suspect with something like that) the foal is still a better show horse than a 10.3 pt second gen. The more show ponies you keep the more show bonus you earn, but stops for them all is tricky. I usually decide how many show foals I can keep from a month's breeding and then go through and pick a bottom PT with the number of foals above or equal to it that I want. I had a good number of higher PT foals this year, so the low number was 10.6. Had few kept foals under gen 3, but the foals I kept should do great in the show ring.
  • I keep anything with a PT 10.0 and up automatically. When it comes to foundations, I usually don't keep new creates who fail SBA--they go directly to auction. If I'm snipping established broodmares I usually try to balance the points they've already earned with their age...if they are sort of 10 and over with less than 100 points they tend to go to auction instead of the show herd.
  • I just keep 10.3 PT and up. No need to bother with foundies when 2G are so easy to get. However I have some horses from before that rule, so my other way to decide is 100pts by end of year 4
Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.
  • I've graphed my horses show records. I made a timeline and color coded 1st 2nd and 3rd place plus upper part of the class, lower part of class and loss. I can see at a glance how well any particular horse is showing compared to the others. This will probably be impossible when I get too many horses but it works for now and I think at that point I can cut back to just graphing my favorites. I favor the 10.5 plus but 10-10.3 is still pretty solid and my herd is too small to be cutting off everything below 10.5 for now.
