Best of the pasture foals
-
Umm What is this gauging exactly? My best of the pasture was altered so I thought the rest were auction bound but managed to test some and I had Blue 3G fillies that passed testing. So?
-
Horses can be altered for many reasons, and one is because they are too inconsistent. A link to the Best of Pasture may help.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.
Prices are almost always negotiable. -
Was that foal perhaps Inconsistent? If they are more than a little consistent, Strict Breeding Advice may neuter them. I had a blue papered filly be spayed by Strict Breeding Advice. Since most of her half sisters had papered Red, I purchased the GMT's to unalter her and then make her consistent. At that point, she stayed intact.De gustibus non disputandum. I would suspect that if you put her through Performance Inspection you would find her to be Inconsistent. If you had the GMTs I would recommend that you spend them to un-alter her and make her consistent.
In the future it might be helpful to PI your BPFs and correct inconsistency in them before you put them through SBA if you can afford to do so. That's what I always did with my BPFs after losing several to inconsistency. -
Same here. Mine was because of inconsistency I believe.Owner Of Bellwether Farm

I dont have Strict Breeding Advise. She was spayed through the regular one. :( I dont understand how she's "the best" when I had other blue papered fillies that passed intact some consistent some not.

It's likely inconsistency or the fact that she has a high showing ability. I'd performance test her for consistency.Owner Of Bellwether Farm

Some horses are more inconsistent than others as well.Owner Of Bellwether Farm

As JordanK mentioned, it might also be her showing ability. Horses whose showing ability is significantly higher than their breeding ability will be spayed or neutered so that they can excel in showing. She might be a good breeder but an even better shower.
Or she could just be really inconsistent. -
The real question is what does the Best of Pasture email gauge?
Is it looking for best showing foal, best breeder, or one that is the best at both?
Obviously this time it was looking at best shower since she was altered by BA.
I have kept a few Best of Pasture foals but most of them pass BA. Here's one. She's a good shower. Just had her first foal this year. (Bred to a good outside stallion) Foal was altered. :(

It has always been my understanding that the BPF is based on breeding ability. However, I may be smoking opium with that idea!
I think I remember Ammit had implied that with the old Strict Mare Advice and Gelding Advice the intact rate would be about 50% for non-pasture breeding with well matched parents. That rate would go up with the pasture bonus. I suspect the intact rate is significantly lower with the new Strict Breeding Advice--I think I've had about 1/3 intact breeding my foundies so far--so you shouldn't be frustrated with low intact rates with hand breeding or straw breeding. It's something we are all going to face.
