Stallion no good?
  • Right, so I had an A papered stallion. He sired 26 (or so) foals out at pasture. Not one passed the strict advice even though he - and all the mares at pasture - had. I'm taking that as he isn't a very good stallion. Would you agree or do you think there are some other factors at play?

  • Link would be great :)
  • Most likely a heck of a lot of bad luck, or mismatched breeding quality. That being said, I've only been getting a handful of foals pass SBA each season from about 200 foals or so bred.

  • It's hard to tell what the cause might be without seeing the stallion and taking a look at the foals and their dams. The answer might be in his pedigree, but assuming automatically that he is a dud based solely on the number of neutered foals would be rash, I think.

The game is deliberately designed to produce a high number of neutered foals, especially if you are using Strict Breeding Advice. Ammit has commented more than once that you can get good results in advancing your lines using regular breeding advice.

Keep in mind that showing is the primary income source in this game, not breeding, so neutered show horses are a good thing, AND there is always next year to try for intact sons and daughters.

Another thing to check is how long the mares had been in pasture. Unless they were there more than 15 days, and the closer to 30 the better, they would not have the full benefit of the pasture bonus, and so more foals would be receiving input from the lower end of their breeding ability ranges.
De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

  • Other people have said something, and I've noticed it too.. that stallions (and mares) don't "hit their stride" so to speak until like their 3rd season. The 1st and 2nd crops just arent as good. Could this be the case? I'm assuming everyone had full pasture bonus?

Also I'd agree with Sandy Creek, maybe if you are short on intacts, don't do SBA as much, you can always do it later. If you have heaps of intact ones then do SBA.

out of curiosity how many passed BA (or can you go straight to SBA and skip BA?)
Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.
  • I skipped BA and went straight to SBA. I also sold the stallion in a hissy fit. Kinda regretting it now. lol

  • Ok, now to remember, A stallions are good (Second highest paper) but to get intact foals it is best to use mares of same quality (similar level blue). I'm just curious, why do you ask if he is a good stallion if you don't have him any more? Just a little puzzled and this is early in he morning.
  • I hit the sell button in a mood and he sold quicker than I expected him to. lol. I thought I'd ask so I could learn for the next time as I've got a few A boys.
