Tattoo etiquette
-
Is it considered bad form to remove a tattoo placed on a horse by a previous owner?
-
No, the horse is now yours to do with as you please. :)
-
Ok, cool. Thanks!
-
No problem. :)

It is generally polite to leave a Breeders tattoo on (so like my Ausmerican Bred daffodils) and not to put your own breeders tattoo on because you didn't breed the horse. Other tattoos that designate genetics or generation are always free range. But you own the horse and are welcome to do as you please.

I never knew it was considered polite to leave breeders tattoos on? I usually take off all tattoos when I buy a horse. I don't use breeder tattoos but I will sometimes remark them with my own KP, DP satin tattoos etc. just so i can find in searches. I'm more likely to keep a breeders name on the horse rather than tattoo. Apologies if it offended anyone! I probably would have thought it was more polite to take off all tattoos before a horse was sold LOL!
-
I think what most people forget is that regardless of taking a "bred by" tattoo off, the horse will always show the original breeder's name on his page!Specializing in W8, W3 & Kit M Cream & Pearl draft horses.

I strongly dislike the idea that your should be expected to leave the breeders tattoo. The horse will always have the breeders name on it. I think the rudeness is asking a herd tat to stay personally.
So in other words there is no consensus etiquette rules.

The only tattoos that I won't remove are the AtA tattoos from show horses sold/donated by the AtA program because I know that AtA likes to keep track of their horses and removing the tattoos makes it harder for that program to run. Also, I'd never remove a HH or RS tattoo from a foundation because that would decrease their value, make it harder to identify special foundations, and it'd be a waste of 500 hbs. However, I'll remove any other tattoo if it's in the wrong place ie snowflake tattoo is in the "wrong" corner for my horses or if I just don't like the way the tattoo looks on the horse. I try to leave breeder tattoos unless I really find the tattoo unattractive on that horse.Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms

I always leave on AtA tattoos since they were donated to me and before they were donated to me they were asked to be left on and any horse I get from Cheers I leave on because she was nice enough to give me the horses for free and the least I can do is leave on the tattoos so Cheers can keep track of them but that's just me those are the only 2 tats ill leave on if I pay a good amount for a horse ill be taking off the tattoos minus the rank specials although I have taken off a few when I first started not knowing what rank specials were lol

If I sell anybody a horse, I'll take the tattoo off. If I want to find the horse later I'll just type my ID# into the breeder ID slot on the search page which is far fewer keystrokes than searching for a tattoo name. As long as you don't put a tattoo on it saying you bred/created the horse yourself, I think its fine. AtA and RS tattoos are the only exception.
I would only use tattoos to search for certain important horses within my own herd. If it has no tattoo then it wouldn't be important enough for me to keep track of.
In fact, I kinda think its rude to leave it on when you sell a horse. That horse is obviously no use to you so the tattoo is pointless and you're asking person who bought it to shell out an additional 500 to remove it, if they even can. I don't think free accounts have that capability.Be not afraid to ask questions. You're not the only idiot in the room.

I don't remove any tattoos....mainly because I'm cheap xDProducer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.
Prices are almost always negotiable. -
I try to remember to take off my generational tattoos when I sell intact horses, because that's how I search for horses when I go to breed. The breeding precautions tattoo I figure could help out anybody, I don't have a 'bred by' tattoo. Regardless, I mostly forget to remove them when I sell them anyway, whether I want to, or not! :P
I take off tattoos if there are just too many of them and the horses picture starts to look 'cluttered'. Other than that I don't fuss about it. -

The account that bred this horse was deleted. You did not re-register her so anyone was able too.

I don't change anything. lol. I don't change tattoos or names. I dislike my breeding horses to have numbers though so if I buy one that doesn't have a name, I usually make one word a variation of the breeder's name. I know it's silly but it's something I like to do.User ID: 25715
