3G horses that are blue and A
-
Should I go away from my red and b papered 3G horses since I am getting A's and blue papered horses now? I have been thinking about this.
-
I've been told that if you have enough to continue your lines, go with the higher paper.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.
Prices are almost always negotiable. -
If you have 3G A papered studs, I would stay away from B papered for the most part since you need a lot fewer studs than mares so you can afford to be stricter with their quality. For mares, it probably depends on how many 3G Blues you have. If you don't want to use the 3G Reds for your lines anymore and they're too old to get a training bonus from spaying, you could breed them to a Star stud with a high AFPT and get some nice altered show foals that way.
-
If it was me, I would snip my 3G Bs ASAP and throw them in my show herd.
I have previously been more conservative when moving from red to blue. If you are pasture breeding, I would snip Reds as you can replace them with Blues in your pasture. If you aren't pasture breeding, I would probably move more quickly as a Red/A pairing isn't as likely to pass testing. Alternatively, you could keep some of the Reds around specifically to produce show ponies with one of your best high gen stallions. -
I keep my absolute favorites and get rid of the rest of the lower papers. Some of the red three g I merged with gen 2 and breed with gen 2 stallions because I am using high B and some A 2g stallions and I know the red threes that passed testing are in that range as well. They usually have afpt around 11 when the even 2gs I keep are more 10.5-10.8, so they are actually increasing the quality of my foal crop. There are only two reds I am currently keeping as three g. One is 17 and has served me well, so she can stay as is her last years, the other is a yearling who is just too pretty. If she doesn't do well I will put her back in with the 2g boys.
-
Yep, as cheers said, the 2g b studs won't help you, you need the studs top notch to bring up any slack in your mares and weed out all the lower foals with advice. I have some studs that I know if the foal passes breeding advice it will paper beautifully as well. Highest studs possible, and I try to go with even too so I know I am keeping with generation quality standards. Breed the mare to the stud that will help achieve best foals. Sometimes that is moving a mare up, sometimes it is putting reds with b studs.
-
Right now I have 11 blues 20 reds and the rest are yellow papered. So I may keep my reds till I get some more blues. I need to paper my foals and see who else is blue.
-
If you have 3G yellow mares I would absolutely snip those. Personally, I always snip 2G yellow mares since it's pretty easy to get Red at 2G. I haven't gotten to 3G yet since my 2G mares aren't old enough to breed, but I expect foals from C X Yellow pairings to paper Red/B and foals from B X Red exceptional pairings to paper Blue/A. I've been trying not to mix regular foundations with exceptional foundations but if I do I still expect the colts to paper A. I allow the fillies from regular X exceptional a little more slack and I let them stay intact if they're Red, although I have managed to get a 2G Blue papered filly from breeding B X Yellow, it's just a lot harder than getting 2G Blues from B X Red. I'm pretty ruthless about snipping though, and I know a lot of people aren't as strict. I don't have access to SBA so I have to go by paper level to judge quality in my young stock. I can look at AFPT as they get older and snip the ones that aren't good enough, but they need a couple foals on the ground first.
-
I don't have access to SBA either. It will hurt but guess that needs to be done. Thanks guys. If anyone else has any suggestions please let me know.
-
If your 3G Red mares are older, I would look at their AFPTs to see what quality of foals they are producing and compare that to the AFPTs of your 3G Blue mares. If you have 3G Reds that have AFPTs that are pretty close to the AFPTs of your 3G Blues, I would keep them intact because that would mean that they're probably higher Reds if they're producing foals that are almost as good as what you're getting from your Blue mares.
-
I have about 14 blue 3g mares I think.
-
Ok will look at those now. Thanks. Should I snip my yellow mares even though I know they may not get a training bonus.
-
If they won't get a training bonus you could just breed them to nice Star stallions to get some good show foals, the same way that a lot of people do with yellow foundation mares.
