My Nomination for the straw. Good or No?
-
I've had a hard time deciding which mare to use my Milestone straw on. I wanted it to be a mare that I had a proven foaling record on and one that didnt have any chances of lethal genes as well..
This is the mare that I came up with. She was bred to different stallions, regulars and an RS. All foals were intact for the months that I kept records on. Wish I had of put if that was with full pasture bonus or not. Do you think this girl would be a good match or should I keep looking?

Try to find a PF or expro mare, that would be your best bet!(It was for me, but then again I gave the same info to Oak and her foal was snipped. Also make sure it papers yellow and is a foundie!) * I used a PF mare this was the outcome.

ExPro wouldn't be a good fit because they have 105% breeding ability and would therefore not be on the same level as the sire. You might want to paper this mare and see her level of consistency. It's a little on the super-safe side but if she's inconsistent, there's a risk of throwing an inconsistent foal that would get snipped.
To be very honest, I agree that you should search for a Perfect Foundation mare. Foundation Rescue often has cute ones, or you could reroll your daily HH or nab one in the forum. Since Mr. Meteoric is a PF, a PF or a PF-level RS would be the best fit with him.
I just did a quick search in the FR and saw quite a few Red Dun mares if you're attached to the dun, and quite a few Palomino mares if you want a very light foal. There's also PFs for sale outside of the FR, of course.Thanked by 1AtA -
I used a PF mare but my boy got snipped so idk but this is my I used a gmt to revert him back to stud

I took a quick peek in your barn and saw a King's Ransom mare and a Stars and Stripes mare. As long as they don't have any additional lethal genes that those RS don't normally have, they should both be completely safe to cross with Milestone and they're equivalent to perfect foundations so their breeding ability is equal to Milestone's.
@OakCreek13 Unfortunately, there's a chance of getting a snipped foal no matter what mare you use, but a PF or PF RS should minimize that chance as much as possible since Mr. Milestone is also a PF. Sometimes people will say things like "I have a PF mare that never produces altered foals so I know she's extra good" or "My PF mare keeps giving me snipped foals so she's not as good as some other PF mares" but those statements just aren't true. All Perfect foundation mares have identical breeding and showing ability and are perfectly consistent. You can have a PF mare that has given you 10 intact foals and another PF mare that has given you 10 altered foals, and their breeding ability is still identical. Whether or not a PF mare keeps giving you snipped foals depends on what stallion you're crossing her with (breed a mare to a stallion that's either much better or much worse than she is and you're basically guaranteed to get snipped foals), how long she's been in pasture (full pasture bonus covers up the bottom portion of a mare's breeding ability range), and of course, random luck. If you could use straws on mares in pasture and get the pasture bonus, that would really increase your chances of an intact Milestone foal, but that's not possible unfortunately. You can't get pasture bonus with straws. -
I used a PF mare and ended up intact. I think that's your best bet.Owner Of Bellwether Farm

I would like to see the mare throw some Foal pt a little higher than a 9.9 before using the straw on her. Higher pt would mean she is hopefully also throwing higher quality that will help keep the foal intact.
-
If you're using a PF mare, they all have 100% breeding ability. Wouldn't any differences in the AFPTs of different PF mares be caused by things like the quality of the stallion(s) they've been bred to, whether or not they had full pasture bonus, and random luck? I wouldn't think that AFPT would tell you anything about the breeding ability of a PF since you already know exactly what level of breeding ability a PF has.Thanked by 1ObsidianKitsune

True, Windward, we are looking at the not PF mare though. AFPT is the best thing I have to look at to find how high yellow she would be.
-
Oops for some reason I thought that mare was from foundation rescue. Yeah, she's not PF you'd have to look at AFPT to determine her quality then. The best bet is to probably just go with a PF mare though since you'd know right away exactly how good she is.
-
@Skylight, if the dun is what you like about the mare you posted, these dun riding horse/pony mares are in foundation rescue and will be old enough to breed next year. The little Red Dun Tobiano riding pony mare is quite light boned (0.79) so she might be your best bet to get a riding horse foal from Milestone.

I think this riding horse mare is also palomino but she doesn't have a HH tattoo and isn't color tested so I don't know for sure.

Thanks ya'll. I'm not particularly stuck on the color. She was just the first mare that I found in the herd that had a record of several intact foals when bred to different types of stallions. Also she didnt have any color genes that would result in a dead foal. I'm sure I have a suitable mare already in my barn. It makes me leary using it on a mare that has never produced a foal before.
I have several RS mares both in yellow and red papers. I have a few who havent been very good breeders whether they were bred to red or yellow. Perhaps that was just the luck of the draw each time.
I'm so nervous about using the straw. Maybe I could try my Randsom RS mare as suggested. -
Skylight if you do, make sure it's a yellow one to better your chances!Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

Skylight, a horse's breeding ability is the same regardless of how many foals it's produced. That's why players have suggested using Perfect Foundations or yellow papered Rank Specials, because their breeding ability is a known quantity and matches Milestone's. For any other mare you won't know it's ability even if it's produced foals (though you can make educated guesses).

Thanks for the help. I'm going to go with the Nano tech mare. Naming it Max a million for a boy or Milly Anna for a girl. :) Just have to close my eyes and hold my breath. :)
-
Good luck I hope you get an intact foal!:)
-
I'd highly suggest you choose a different mare. Nanotechs have white 2 which can be lethal when combined with the white 10 and white 3 genes that Mr Milestone has. If you use your Milestone straw on a Nanotech mare, there's a significant chance you'll end up with a dead foal. :(

Your Stars and Stripes mare doesn't have any genes that would be lethal when combined with Milestone. This thread about Kit mutations in the announcements section has some really useful info about lethal kit combinations. The chart with the colored boxes gives you a basic idea, and the link to the Google doc right underneath that chart will open up a much more detailed spreadsheet that includes information about how the white factor of the foal affects lethal kit crosses as well. The only kit genes that are completely safe to cross with Milestone are roan, Tobiano, white 20, and sabino 2. All the others will give you a chance at a potential dead foal, and some are much riskier than others.

Yay I got a filly. A yellow one :( but she has a super long color name.
Too afraid to do BA with her being yellow and so many others had altered foals. Think I'll let her cook for awhile. :)
