Straw advice - indecision running rampant
  • With the new breeding season almost upon us, I’m still undecided on what to do with my Mr. Meteoric Milestone. In reality I’m really not a fan of flashy or excessive white, but on here, it’s a different story. Mostly because I don’t have to keep them clean :D

I’ve only been here just over a month, so experienced opinions greatly appreciated... even if it's just 'bin that mare' :p

Of the bare bones breeding plans I have in my head, one is a chocolate/liver line. What I would like from the cross is either liver or chocolate, with pearl being a nice bonus if it happens. So my initial thought for the straw was this mare:

The only issue is she’s just turned 4 so I have no previous breeding experience with her, and she’s also both inconsistent and 8.3 PTG. (I’m happy to ‘fix’ consistency, and boost the foal if necessary).

Alternatively, there’s my King’s Ransom mare – the only downside being her foal from last year was gelded, which is not ideal. She’s also hom for black which means I don’t have any chance of a red baby... but if she’s a ‘safer’ bet in terms of avoiding the snip, I could still go for it.

    The other potentials are:

    G1 NW Roots

    G1 NW Blue Moon

(Only Ee – so red babies possible.)

    G1 KR Sunbeam

    G1 KR Sally B

    G1 KR Ingrid

No flash, but she produced a consistent red papered filly last season, which admittedly could be pure luck.

  • I'd go with either a perfect foundation mare or a perfect foundation quality RS like King's Ransom. Mr. Milestone is also a perfect foundation and breeding two horses together that have identical breeding ability is the best way to get an intact foal.

Also, there seems to be a big misconception lately that perfect foundation mares are somehow better if they throw lots of intact foals and worse if they produce lots of snipped foals. This is simply not true. All Perfect Foundations and Perfect Foundation equivalent RS will have identical breeding ability and be perfectly consistent. Whether or not a perfect foundation mare gives you intact foals depends on the stallion you breed her to (big difference between mare and stallion breeding abilities will give you mostly snipped foals), whether or not she has a pasture bonus, and random luck. There is nothing you can do to guarantee an intact foal, unfortunately. In the case of the Mr. Milestone straws, the best way to increase your chances of an intact foal is to breed to a PF mare so that both parents have identical breeding ability. You don't get a pasture bonus when you use straws and you can't control random luck either.
  • Thank you, that definitely helped with the decision. I disregarded the original choice and went with a hom Sty chestnut mare. Although not a perfect foundation, she's done me alright before.

Ended up with exactly what I wanted (chocolate palomino with w10) but she's a white out. She also papered yellow but somehow survived the snip (Edit: One boost later, she's papered Red :D).

  • She's really pretty! She got w20 from her dam which generally increases the amount of white on a horse. Her dam has one copy of w20 and one plain Kit gene, so if you'd prefer to see less white on your foal, you can use one GMT on the foal and change Kit w20 to Kit. That would most likely decrease the amount of white on your filly. You can also try rerolling your filly's portrait to see if you can get an image with less white. It only costs 100 hbs per reroll so I'd suggest doing some rerolls first to see if you can get an image you're happy with, and then only go the GMT route if you still can't get an image you like for her.
  • Also, if you're disappointed she didn't get Pearl from Milestone, you could use one GMT to change the cream she got from her sire to Pearl. Then she would be a Liver chestnut Pearl carrier instead of chocolate palomino (she won't show her Pearl though).
