Reason why foals make better show horses?
  • I ask this because I bred three of my mares (one red papered and two blue) to a star papered stud and when I tested them all, all three of them were spayed/gelded. I just if theres a particular reason why or if it is just the pairing or what is going on. A little bummed because I spent in the five figures for all three covers.
  • They were really uneven, is my guess. Star is as high as they can go, and if the foal is worse than it's parents, it gets snipped. Had that problem this season. Lots of show ponies from my pastures because I had 2 b studs and very few red mares.
  • For red mares they are better bred with a B papered stud and for blue mares an A paper stud.
Even then Foals are not guaranteed to be intact :)

  • Your mares aren't as good as the stallion you picked. When breeding horses with such different breeding ability, you are much more likely to end up with snipped foals.

    In general

C is about the same as Yellow (most Foundations)
B is about the same as Red (some Foundations, most Gen 2s)
A is about the same as Blue (some gen 2s, gen 3, some gen 4s)
*Star is about the same as *Gold (some gen 4s, gen 5 and up)

But there are horses that will be high, medium and low quality within each paper level as well. I've put in the parentheses the generations that generally fit into each paper level, though those are somewhat ambitious targets.
  • oooh, wow I was not aware of how they matched up. Okay, thank you.
  • If your goal is to get high PT gelded and spayed show prospects, then breeding your lower papered mares to a high quality Star stallion is actually a really good idea. The foals will pretty much all get altered by breeding advice, but you can get some really great show foals that way for pretty cheap, especially if the Star stallion you choose has a low breeding fee. If you have some intact mares that are decently papered but they are very unevenly bred or have terrible pedigrees, you may not want to use them to produce intact foals for breeding, but they can still give you some great altered show foals if you breed them to a quality stallion. I have a couple unevenly bred Blue papered mares that I purchased for cheap with the intent to use them to breed show foals. When I bred them to a quality Star stallion this season, I got some lovely gelded and spayed foals with PT scores ranging from 11.3 - 12.3 so those foals will make great show horses once they're older and they should earn lots of hbs and points for me during their show careers.

If your goal is to produce intact foals to use for breeding, then your best bet is to breed evenly and follow the good advice that other players have already posted.
