Stallion Decisions
-
I have over 30 second gen Stallions lol.
Help! Lmao. Some I know for sure I want to keep. Others not so much.
What factors do you guys take into account when choosing her sires?DivineDreams ~ 30908
Breeder of KitM, W10, W3, Livers, Chocolates, Brown, S+, Pearl, Macchiato, Nexus, and WaterColor! -
First: paper. Must paper B or potentially A from ExPerf/ExPro lines for Gen 2.
Second: comparison test. I comp test to a benchmark. Generally I want my B colts to paper As Good As a low A, but I have really high expectations. At minimum they must test Superior to their sire.
Third: color. What genes do I want to perpetuate in that line?
Fourth: Consistency. I want my stallions to be consistent. I am willing to GMT an ideal candidate to get this!
Fifth: PT--if I have two colts that are equal in all the other categories, I snip the one with the higher PT to be a show pony and keep the lower PT intact to be my breeding stallion.
(Obviously I've already tested with Strict Breeding Advice before I start my list....) -

Tight on money? Skip steps 2 and 4 and concentrate on 5.

If you're a bit tight on money, you might use Cheers' guidelines but in a bit of a different order. Still first run them through Breeding Advice or Strict Breeding Advice first, but then maybe take a look at their color (and I'll usually look at height too) and decide if the colt is even something that you'd use in your program(s) anyway.
If you don't have a lot of GMTs or funds for GMTs to make foals consistent, you could also just go ahead and Performance Test first (only $500) and rule out any inconsistent colts before spending the $1000 to paper them and $4000 or $8000 to comparison test them.
Usually comparison testing is the very last thing I do to determine if I'm going to keep a colt intact for breeding. And if it's a colt that I'm unsure I want to spend the money on to comparison test, then I'm better off snipping him and waiting for something else to come along that actually "wows" me. :) -
I totally agree with Kinetic if you're low on game cash! There are several ways she's mentioned to get your numbers down before you do the expensive tests!
I do recommend that you Paper your geldings though. It's free on your altered horses and I think it can help you see the overall quality of a batch of foals....if you have a mare throwing a lot of Failed or Showable Only foals, you might consider getting rid of her as a breeder.
One other thing--if you are pasture breeding, please take advantage of the pasture email feature. If your best foal is a colt, it's worth it to Paper it first. If it doesn't Paper where you want your colts to for that generation, there's no point in wasting your money on the rest of the colts! -
How do you get the pasture emails? I get the message in game but have yet to get an actual email. What email does it got from? Thanks!
-
It could be that your email provider doesn't accept them...gmail used to not, but now it does.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.
Prices are almost always negotiable. -
What do u mean by pasture emails? Donthey tell you who your best colt or filly is?
I use a second breeding pasture to move mares from my big pasture to the little one so I can control which stallion gets which mare lolDivineDreams ~ 30908

When you breed via the pasture, the game sends you an email to the email you used when signing up. The email tells you what the best foal in your pasture is.#28036

I didn't know this. I went and looked on my old email that I signed up with, and no notifications. :( I changed to my yahoo email, so hopefully that will work.

I just discovered this feature a couple days ago...Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.

If you aren't getting emails, be sure to check you spam/junk folders. My first couple went to junk, then I set it to "not junk" and I get them every time I breed my pastures.#28036
