Is a red 3rd gen worthy
  • Ive been getting blues by 3rd gen so spaying any reds.. ive let one kitM filly slip through but none others..
Then i get this filly from my mr meteroric son..
I was only breeding with my barn horses who arent draft just to see what he would give me.. so far they have all been non drafts so i was happy to spay/geld.. she got all the good genes from her sire! She passed sba.. should i keep her intact and put her in pasture and if all else get pretty show ponies or should i just spay her seen as im getting blue 3rd gens.. need opinions!! What would you do??
(I need to still breed my stud to my pasture 2nd gens so will definently get some drafts then but this filly seems to have it all minus dp)!

  • I would say keep her, but only keep any of her babies that paper higher than her. There's a chance that she's a high red and will throw A/Blue babies.

I keep all of my red 3Gs intact mainly because I only have 2 blues in my herd. I'll start phasing them out when I get more of the higher ones, but I will always keep a mare that's ideal in colour if it passed BA and is red.

  • Also her mane makes her look like a silver xD Very pretty girl, just had to add that!

  • Thankyou :) ill keep her then.. and yes her babies definently need to be A/Blue to stay intact.. shes very cute :)

  • She is gorgeous.
  • I'd be very surprised if anyone gets any blues by 3rd gen out of the milestone line unless it's boosted. Straws have no pasture bonus. You'd have to be lucky is my guess - let's face it only a few of us got intact foals without any sort of boost. Which is fine but I think you are being too strict - she is lovely foal :)
  • Keep her...
I go by if the foundation parents are C/Yellow, then I might let a Red slip through at third gen (I would have to love it though) but if the parents are Red/B Foundations then I expect Blue/A by Gen 2

  • Blue by third gen is 100% possible. You do not need boosts to get intact foals at all!

No comment on if you should keep her but blue by third is very possible.
  • I just bred a 3g red that got all the goodies from her sire, as well! I usually only keep 3gs that are blue papered, but she is definitely going to be an exception.

  • I try to keep all my third gens blue. There are some red mares I decided not to spay, so I bred them to second gen stallions till I sold them recently. They were really high red mares, so they were probably doing me well, but done is done. Then there was this mare that I can't even push her back a gen. She will be my breeding third gen A soon.

  • If you keep her or not depends on you. Is she good for your lines? Is she a good quality for your herd. Blue by third is very possible, even without boosts, but what does your third gen herd look like? Lots of blue? A handful of blue with mostly reds? How will she fit in with them? She survived the testing, I assume. All you really lose out on by breeding her and seeing how she does is HB's.

Basically, see how she works in your herd, don't cull her just because other people cull 3rd gen reds. What works for them might not work for your herd.
  • I sometimes let gen3 red mares slip threw because I have like 3 blue 3 gen mares out of a ton of 3 gens I do a lot tube babies so I don't get very foals blue/A at 3 gen and sometimes I get a 2gen blue or A but it's usually a coat I don't breed for usually and it misses the good genes from their parents and I only have a few of them..so I'd say hold onto her until you get more blues/A at 3rd gen then once you get more spay her but sadly they are not that easy to get
  • For me, unless she had some special genes or I really liked her I would spay. It's not that hard to get blue by 3rd gen from unboosted lines, even with tube babies.
  • Well it's impossible for me and all I breed is tube babies lol I must have really bad luck :D out of 200 3rd gens I have 3 blue or A :))
  • It's about luck :) Some of us just aren't that lucky - we all know 3rd gen blue is possible but often we increase our chances by pasture bonus - all I am saying is our straw didn't have that pasture bonus so we have to be extra lucky :)
  • True that ChiliFire lol hopefully this year's pasture breeding will bring me some luck :) well more then one A out of 50 mares
  • My first 2g ice 13 colt was a test tube baby and he's A papered ;) It's all luck of the draw, honestly. I tend to mostly use pastures but I also do a few embryos.

  • OK. Further to my comments above I have produced a Blue papered girl from my milestone stallion (yay!) but I have bred him to lots of different gen and uneven as well. My guess - statistics meant that eventually I would be lucky! She's incon but she picked up S+ and W10. Not perfect but not bad:_
