Cull Percentages - Research Experiment - Please Post
  • I like this but not sure how you all are doing it. If I post the two studs I used for my foundation herd can someone help me with the math.

    Nanos Primer RS f

Primer is one. He has a total of 35 foals from 3 years to yearlings.
  • So as long as all his foals are a live and none of them were yummed right now he currently stands at 23% alter rate. I rounded up because technically it's 22.85and on and on and on lol.
I'm horrible at math. I use this site and one that says ____is what % of _____
    http://www.calculator.net/percent-calculator.html?c22par1=8&c22par2=35&ctype=22&x=48&y=14#pctcommon
You punch in the first box the number of foals altered and in the last box the total number of foals and hit calculate :D
  • Mint's alter rate would be 20%
  • you want the altered foals to be higher than the intact correct? This pasture only had 20 days of pasture bonus.
  • No you want the altered foals less than the intact foals. The lower the percentage the better.

This guy had 9 foals out of 30 who got altered by SBA. All mares had full pasture bonus. He has an alter rate of 30%.
  • image
    WO1 Your Darkest Hour

This guy had 27 foals this year. All his mares had full pasture bonus. 14 of them were altered by SBA. He has a alter rate of 52%.
  • image
    WO1 Nicolas Feuillatte

This guy threw me for a loop. All his mares had full pasture bonus. He sired 30 foals. Out of which 8 were altered by SBA. That gives him an amazing alter rate of 27%.
  • I'm going to start keeping these notes on my stallions pages.
  • 23 foals culled out of 30 covered

    WO1 The White Raven

This guy bred a total of 22 foals this year. Out of which only 3 were altered by SBA. That leaves him with an alter rate of 14%.
  • image
    WO1 Saint Johns Eve

This guy bred a total of 44 foals this year. Out of which 23 were altered by SBA. That leaves him with an alter rate of 52%.
He was sharing the pasture White Raven. Both are RS studs. Saint John must have been having a really bad year. Just gives you an idea at how far they can swing. All the mares had full pasture bonus and I believe all if not most of the mares are PF.
  • Can I ask what it is you are trying to research? :D
  • I would like to know the same thing but I have to admit it is interesting to see in my own stallions. It might be interesting to see how a normal create stallion matches up to an RS stallion if put with the same mares. Would a normal create have a larger down swing? This whole thread might give new players an idea of the range of swing they can expect, so that what they think is a really bad breeding season really is within the normal range of expected loses.
  • I agree with fj1482. It's comforting to see that it can be normal to have no intact foals from a couple breedings and I find it a little fascinating to see how well everyone is doing this season. It also gives better insight into everyone's different breeding plans.

I am also using this forum to mark different lines I may have to try and sample from later and possibly foal shop. I'm a browser, not a searcher.

    And I like math.

I loved the variety in his foals, so beautiful. I'm keeping all his intact fillies and I have a ton of colts to cull. If anyone sees a colt they want that isn't named go ahead and msg me asking price is 2500$. They will probably end up in auction at some point.

    Mares had full pasture bonus

    total(intact)cull%
    Foals: 50(41)18%
    Colts: 29(23) 24%(rounded)
    Fillies: 21(18) 10%(rounded)

  • He's got some very pretty babies. At least two colts that caught my eye. Love the buckskin appaloosa boys.
  • No, I will check it out.
  • That is awesome! Had to mark that as a thread I hold on to.
  • Well there's a number of things I'm curious about.

To start off with it's interesting to see the "raw" alteration rate. Or the rate before culling. Especially interested in what the more experienced players are getting.

Then I'm interested in the "cull" rate, and cull procedures. For example for my 2nd generation foals I look at the appearance. I have plenty of real life plain chesnuts, and don't want any on this game. Now here's where I'm debating with myself. SBA for colts, and "on the fence fillies" or SBA for all? On mares I'm just gonna auction back I SBA all and only further test if they have a positive appearance. At this point I only PT a show prospect If I like the for whatever reason.

For 3G foals I BA fillies, and SBA colts. Every single one left gets PT tested. My cutoff point is 10.5 PT. Only alters below 10.5 get "rejected/culled". Of course there are exceptions.

Then for 4G foals I have so few they all just get BA, and PT tested.

Then I'm interested to see how many intacts people keep versus how many altered they keep. I'm sure like me they hope stallions to throw certain appearances, and if the foals don't have that then most likely they will move along.

Then for my *star show stallion. He has an alteration rate of 100%, but only a cull rate of 3%. He throws what I want him to throw. High color and high PT, even with foundations.

So, I guess I am researching how many of a stallions foals throw, what is "desired"
Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.
  • If I had known that I would have added more info to my stallions. After SBA testing I cull pretty heavy, probably way more than you think. WO1 Your Darkest Hour is a good example. He sired 24 foals. 14 were altered by SBA and then I cut another 8 out of that. By the time I was done I only kept 5 foals (3 fillies and 2 colts). That's typical of my breeding though. My cream herd I'm just as tough. Between the two stallions I have 66 foals. Of those SBA altered 26. Of those left intact I'm only looking at keeping 16 and I haven't tested them yet so I'm sure by the time I'm done the number will be less that that.
  • Wow, that is a lot! Are you culling the intact ones by color?
Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.
  • After SBA I go through color and get everyone out that I know I will not be using. No reason to waste hb's on horses I know I wont use for breeding. Then I go through and test everyone who is left.

    You Knew Exactly When

This is his second season, first season I'm actually keeping anything. I've decided that I'm only keeping HomE fillies from him, I'll worry about colts in later seasons. Most of what I got will be sent to auction. Maybe a few kept back for private auction next season since he is throwing some flashy blacks. I also kept a couple show ponies this season.

He is het black and most of the mares are het black as well. It was pretty cool seeing all the Chesnuts pop up.

    Mares had full pasture bonus.

    total(intact)cull%
    Foals: 50(43)14%
    Colts: 26(21)20%
    Fillies:24(22)8%

Keeping: 7 fillies 2 alters my personal cull rate for him is 82%
  • So, out of 8 colts I had my eye on from my cream herd I only kept 4. The other 4 did not compare superior to their sire. I'm sure I will end up selling some of them because I only need two. One of them I kept because he has some really cool markings that I can use in one of my other lines.

  • Oh! I like that. Is that the frame interacting with the splash?
  • I believe so. I'm going to add him to my silver buckskin herd because that herd has no cool patterns right now. I normally don't use frame stallions but with that herd currently it will be safe to use him.
  • Another stud done for the season.

He is bred mainly for auction fodder. I kept 2 foals this time around. One show pony and one colt I'm not sure if I want to keep.

    total(intact)cull%

    Colts: 31(8)66%
    Fillies: 19(2)90%

He's got a large white factor due to his patterns but I really like him. May have to auction him though. Decisions.
  • @SeldomSeen he has a half moon with a face on his back facing downward he is very pretty :)
  • I'm not sure how well Magical Texas Tea did he is my main breeding stud this season. He had 53 foals this season out of that 22 were intact and 31 were not
I don't know what the percentage is 10 were pasture foals and the rest were tube babies I'm not done breeding him though.

29 mares. 9 day pasture bonus. Mostly Blue mares. (Somehow the best of pasture was from a red mare?).

    Procedures:
    fillies through BA
    colts through SBA.

Don't have money to now, but then will test for paper level, although I doubt any could paper lower than Blue/A. Any lower than that will be altered.

1 colt, and 8 fillies made it. 70% alteration rate.

Then when I have money the non intact ones will be PT tested. Any with PT lower than 10.5 will be culled.

1 have been culled via color. Non desirable.

Cull rate of 3.5%. (May be updated as I have been unable to test for paper, or PT yet).

    Next Season:

Full pasture bonus. Possibly be more strict on mares.

34 foals. 9 day pasture bonus.

    Fillies through BA
    Colts through BA

If I get at least one A colt then colts will be culled via paper.

All altered were evalutated on desireablility of appearance. 5 culled. 15% cull rate so far. Will also cull on PT. 10.5.

    70% alteration
    15% culled.

16 mares. Some had 9 day pasture bonus. Some had none. All foals through SBA.

5 intact. (Which is actually high compared to the other stallions). 4 colts, 1 filly.

    68% alteration rate.

One of the altered was unusually beautiful so will be kept for PT testing. 2 of the stallions were ugly, and Warmbloods so were culled.

    68% alteration rate
    75% cull rate so far.

  • Sir Fancy is so pretty! I love that combination!
  • Thanks! He's one of my favorites. Seems to do better than the RS even. He's 15 now, and I'm going to be sad when he ages out.

2nd Gen herd. No pasture bonus. Wasn't gonna keep the foals but he surprised me and threw a few A/Blue. 2 colts and 2 fillies. Both colts are superior to sire but one is AGA my 2nd gen benchmark so I'll probably end up culling the him. I also kept 2 show ponies for total of 6

    CV White Wedding

A White Wedding stud, he had 51 foals this season, one was an embryo and 50 pasture. I bred him to my Fairy Tail herd. The goal of this herd is to breed homozygous black with blue eyes. I'm thinking about going to a restricted splash as the only pattern but I have an addiction to white.

Bred to my main pasture herd. Had a lot of flashy babies, quite a few full leopards too. Mostly microdots, almost feel like I should shuttle him over to the microdot discussion. So pretty and very hard to choose a favorite.

Narrowed my favorite to her. Almost a full leopard, silver mane and tail, microdots. So lovely and I can't wait until she's 4.
