Help with PT scores...
  • On my exceptional producing horses I know foundation horses start at 10.4. From 2g and up do you want a .3 or .4 increase per generation?

I am looking at going through and cutting back my lines. I am going to keep the horses but geld based off of PT scores.

I have mare barns from A to barn K and my stallion barn are A through G right now. I only have 3 show barns.
  • Here's what @Cheers told me way-back-when when I had the same problem :)

"It absolutely varies from player to player. I use the pasture bonus with all of my horses. So I require a pretty aggressive increase in PT with each generation.

I expect 10.0 and up for gen 2
10.5 and up for gen 3
11.0 and up for gen 4
11.3 and up for gen 5
11.6 and up for gen 6

I am starting to see a sprinkling of 12.0 and up foals at gen 5 and 6, so that's pretty exciting!"
  • These horses won't have pasture bonus because I show them. So based on that what degree should they increase each generation?
  • Ammit has said an increase of 0.3 per generation is good. However, I would recommend culling based on AFPT, not mare PT.
  • PT has nothing to do with breeding ability, so culling breeding stock based on their PT might not be a good idea because it's an irrelevant consideration.

Also, just an FYI but only Exceptionally PERFECT horses have a 10.4PT - exceptional producers can have any PT because only their breeding ability is guaranteed.
  • I know but I have a lot of mares and stallions so trying to get down in number. It is easier for me to cull based on PT scores than papering them right now.

  • @Cheers I still don't quite understand the AFPT on mares. Even if I was to use it on my mares I still am not sure how to cull them based on it.
  • I cull by PT because I show my broodies too. I'm trying to breed dual purpose girls.

  • So Best, what I tend to do is if I planned to have a generational PT cut off (say, 10.0 for gen 2 foals), I apply that to the mothers of that generation as an AFPT instead. After 3 foals and for every foal thereafter the mare must maintain an average foal PT of 10.0. If she throws a lower foal and I sell it, I make a note in her notes so I can add it to her existing foals and calculate a correct AFPT for her.

  • Aw ok. I understand that. Been working hard today at all my mares.
