How should I price my horses?
-
When setting a breeding price for studs or straw price, what are good factors to use? How do I know if I am setting my prices too low, or over pricing a stallion that probably not as great as I think? I generally base my pricing off of average foal PT, but I have a lot of stallions that I just haven't bred to myself, or no one else breeds to them. I also have a lot of RS studs, and am not sure how to accurately price them if I put them up for public breeding or pull straws from them. When I do pull straws, I usually only do it when another player or member asks for them, and negotiate the price with them. In my experience doing that, they've usually said I am under-pricing my studs. I have them priced from 1 hbs to about 100 hbs if they have a high AFPT.
I will attach a link that will show all the stallions I have, and I have quite a few. I don't expect anyone to go through and price each one for me, but more or less a general ball park of what I should be setting their breeding fees at?

I don't put many of my stallions up for public stud anymore, though I probably should. I never did put them up in order to make money, only to share them with others. My practice back when I was doing it looked something like this:
Ordinary create foundation stallions--1 hb
Exceptional breeder foundations--250 hbs
2nd from ordinary creates--250
2nd gen exceptional crosses--500
and so forth, in that pattern.
For rarer or special genes, I would increase the price.
However, I don't play as intensely as some others, so my patterns may not be ones you want to follow.

I don't really do it for the money, I like to share what I have and I have so many stallions I don't really get the chance to breed all of them that much. Usually each season I have a different line I like to work on and pick apart and make a good foundation for. I have a Silver Bay line that I absolutely adore that I've spent the last few breeding seasons focusing on, but the rest of my stallions just kinda sat around without any use. I'm still learning about genes and everything, and I have a few horses with some interesting coloring and patterns that I think others would enjoy, and so I would like to share those while also making sure my boys are properly priced.

I try to price my stud fees so new players have access to them. Remember when 500 Hajibucks was a big deal? When each dollar of your $87 show bonus made a difference? These new players are the majority of who will be utilizing your stud offerings.
I know when I started, being able to make decent show horses by crossing my Foundation mares (who were often mediocre) with a really high PT stud, made me really happy, but there was no way for me to spend thousands on stud fees.
Sandycreek's prices and breeding philosophy of standing to share genes are awesome, IMO. I'd rather know people are super happy with my "too low" fees, than know a player had to use a different stallion they did not like as much just because I priced them out of using mine.
When I first played, I used to put my best boys up for public stud. Now, I have way too many stallions to stand every month. I will stand any horse (or collect straws) upon request, and just ask what the player would like to pay.
Even if the player makes what seems to ME a poor match PT/paper/quality/gen-wise, it might make them really, really happy, and it's no skin off my nose. I also don't have super elite pedigrees, and most of my stock are 3rd gen or earlier. My studs don't have high enough AFPT to be on the leaderboards, so I don't care if they are affected by a few low foals. I might feel differently if I spent three years developing a line.
