Uneven breeding experiment update.
  • I have been working on an uneven breeding experiment for several months now. I wanted to see how fast I could go from Foundation to 50% testing survival rate when breeding to my 9 and 10th Gen studs. Each generations the males all get culled and I breed the mares back to my high Gen studs. I wanted to see how much faster it was using a strong stud on weak mare, rather than breeding up even generations. I only run the breeding advice tests on the males, and I am using them as a sort of litmus test as to when I can start testing the mares without losing them all. Mares I cull by papers. Blue for 2nd gen, Gold for 3rd gen. 4th Gen will be gold too, and I am hoping that by 5th gen I can start testing the mares to cull them.

I am breeding for 3rd Gens now. This round I out of roughly 100 males I had 7 survive breeding advice and 1 survive strict breeding advice. The mares were about 50/50 Gold and Blue. My PT's are in the mid 12's. With a few as high as 12.9. Over all the experiment is going well. As I said, I hope to have a decent number of horses surviving breeding advice testing by 5th Gen, at which point the mares will get cycled into my regular herds and treated the same as the evenly bred horses. Considering my current horses are 9 and 10th gen (though I have really stopped counting the generations, and tried to focus on pairing strong breeders) The method seems to be 50% faster than regular breeding. Time will tell though.

That being said, I would not recommend this method to any new player. I started out doing things the standard way, and that gave me a decent feel for the game. (I also have more HB's than I know what to do with. I can afford to have it all fail miserably.)
  • Pretty cool! i never bred uneven before if i can remember.

  • This is how I boot strap lines. I also think it is a perfectly viable way for new members to get a ton of great show horses.
  • This is certainly a very successful way to get great show horses! 3rd gen with 12+ PTs? Nice!

  • Yeah, for getting show horses it is great. I had High 11's low 12's in second gen. The best part about using this method to get show horses is that the Breeding inspection button works just like a mass alteration button would.
  • Bumping this back up so more people can read this.

  • This is pretty awesome.

  • I often breed my high gens to HHs (in pretty colours) to get pretty show horses with lovely PTs. :)
  • What is "boot strapping" lines?
    #28036
  • To boot strap something is to start it up quickly from nothing.
  • I've just gone in auction to buy an uneven mare, hoping to use her to outside studs to get good show ponies. Don't have much room, but thought this was a good idea.

  • Better to get your hand on a strong stud to breed to lesser mares. When getting show ponies you really need to be aware of cost. Spending more on making a horse than you are going to get back in earnings isn't going to get you anywhere. One nice stud can net you 50 show horses a month, for the one time cost of buying them and then low breeding costs. Mares you have to keep paying outside stud fees and they only get you one baby a month.

You said you don't have a lot of room. So I assume you don't have a lot of room for show horses either, Best bet is to trim down your breeding herds. You have a lot of intact horses. Try to trim down to one line, one or two studs per generation, focus your efforts. You can always try to do fun new things later.

You can grab a nice stud, 9 or 10th gen, and use some of your current mares that won't fit in that one line you are making to make you show babies. Geld the boys, keep the mares, and when you have enough mares to replace your current mares breed those girls back to their dad. That will net you lots of nice show babies and in 6-9 months they will be earning you lots of HB's. Buy more barns, make more show ponies and when you have oodles of cash start breeding all the pretty horses.

  • Awesome to hear! I might actually experiment with that. My breeding has been feeling stagnant recently, and if I threw everyone everyone with my really high stallion they could be put in pasture again.
  • That's kind of why I did this, my breeding was getting stagnant. I'm beyond the point where papering tells me anything useful, and my horses had stopped advancing. I resorted my mares not be generation but grouped them by AFPT and paired them with good studs. My poor mare herd has improved and I am seeing some advancement in my horses again. I've gotten at least a dozen in the 13+ range this month. These uneven mares are going to, eventually, help give me a stronger mare herd. This also gives me something to work on while waiting for my upper level horses to get sorted out.

  • This is FANTASTIC advice.

This is the lesson to be learned about even/uneven breeding.
  • Good advice, I've stalled on the 9th/10th generations as well and this could be a good way to revamp my herds
