Palominos with DP
  • Does anyone have some solid examples of what the DP gene looks like in palominos? I'm experimentally trying to breed chocolates but I'm struggling to pick mares because I can't quite tell if they're just sooty or if they carry the DP gene.
Or maybe most of my mares have it and I just think it looks like plain variations of sooty palomino. What subtlety am I missing here? :)

    Some of my mares:

  • All of those ladies are Hom Sooty palominos. You will know if there is DP hiding, because when 3 darkening genes are present the horses actual name is Chocolate Palomino.
I’ll list a couple of my foundation ladies

Each one of these ladies carries a copy of DP, making them Chocolate. If you happen to have a Freaky Friday stallion RS, which was released on the 13th of this month, you can breed him to your Hom Sooty Palomino ladies and take a chance on getting either a liver (no copy of cream) or a chocolate Palomino (one copy of cream). The Freaky Friday RS is the only RS guaranteed to have two copies of DP, as well as having two copies of Sooty. In case you don’t have one of those, I have a 3 yo liver foundation stallion I would be happy to sell you. He’s only het DP, but there is a chance he will pass it along.
  • Here is the stallion in case you need him

  • The easiest way to breed chocolate palys is to get mares who all are hom sooty and breed them to a liver or black liver stud. DP will make a single soot mare look like a double, but there's also natural variation in the colors, so even then, it's hard to tell. You can make an educated guess by looking at the mare's parents, but that isn't an option with Foundations.
  • I'm glad you posted this. Was just looking into this very thing. Thank you
So the Do isn't something you can actually see in the gene line. But something you can see with the eye. Like those sooty pallys.?
  • That's correct. DP is one of a few genes that is not included in the gene test. Kit Promoter (KP) is a second one, and Gulastra Plume (GP) is the third.

Those other two you have to keep track of with tattoos or notes of some sort saying they may be carriers.

  • Snowflake is another :)
  • The very easiest way to breed for chocolate palominos is to get a hom dp liver stud and breed him to hom sooty cremello mares. That way you are guaranteed to get hom sooty, het cream, het dp foals - chocolate palis :) I love them and do a lot of breeding for them myself.

  • The best thing about DP on palominos is that you’ll know when it’s there because their colour name changes to chocolate palomino. Same with chestnuts becoming livers. The real trick is learning to spot DP on colours like bay and buckskin as these colour names don’t change.

If you use the Sooty Palomino Herd helper to create a bunch of hom sooty mares, then breed them to a DP-carrying stud, you have a good chance of getting some chocolate palomino foals.
  • I believe that this guy of mine is most likely hom DP, just as an example. (The experts can certainly correct me if I'm wrong!): image
    Chocolate Lace Cr DP III
  • @pfrsue Yes, he looks Hom DP.

I may have some DP non sooty palominos, I'll have to check and see if I still have them. I'll post examples if I find them.

DP without sooty will not change the color label, it only changes if there are 3 or 4 "dark" genes. Like said above, if you can use a Hom Sooty Hom DP stud on sooty palomino, you will get livers and chocolates. Black liver bred to Sooty cremello would give you all chocolates.

  • So palominos will be chocolate with even one copy of DP? :-/
  • Yes so long as they have 2 sty.
They can also have 1 sty with 2 DP and be chocolate.

They just need to have 3 darkening genes. (Sty,sty, DP or sty, DP,DP)

We need confluences ninja chart :))

  • I breed Liver Chestnuts and Chocolate Palominos. And all my foundation mare’s are Hom Sty, and non of them have DP. I Found a Black Liver stallion as my primary sire. But/Or you could find a Hom DP Chocolate Palomino for your line, that might be a better fit for you. It just might be harder to find one.
  • God grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,
The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time.
