I'm still so Co fused on how you guys tell if they are DP? I have a freaky Friday mare but she's black?----
Barn ID 4953 -
All Freaky Friday horses are Hz sooty and DP, and can either be Black based or red based. It means that any Foal sired or foaled by them will have one copy of sooty and one copy of XP, plus whatever it gets from the other parent. :)
Any Rank Special horse is made up of certain genes, with some small variety in genes like flaxen, pangare, and such. I know that one Yule Log stud actually was created with a copy of Tobiano, so they have some leeway in other more prominent genes as well. -
Color--a lot of it is knowing the bloodlines. Like we know all Freaky Friday's are DP DP. And I know my stud, Red King, is DP DP because I paid to put it on him when the gene was available for a limited time in the GMT lab.
The rest of it is just getting your eye in. With the new Liver breeders club, that helps for red based horses that are chestnut, red dun or palomino. Those horses can be registered in the Liver club if they have 3 or 4 out of 4 darkening genes.
Darkening genes--there are 4 slots for darkening genes on every horse. Obviously on some the genes show up better than others--hard to tell on double creams, champagnes and blacks. So your horses have 2 genes in the sooty slot. They may be S, Ssty or S+. And then there are two hidden slots for DP, which may be dp or DP. If a red based horse has 3 or 4 of those slots with a darkening gene (Ssty, S+ and DP), they are liver/chocolate.
DP can also show up on bays, revealing a rich, chocolatey brown color on regular bays (A), bright bloody red on wild bays (A+) and redder undertones on browns (At). If you want examples of these colors, search Ausmerican DP in the tattoo slot on the horse search. I have a bunch of DP in my herd. Dance Off is a particularly cool DP brown stallion (in my opinion) and he's passed his DP on to some of his foals. -
So I'm curious - both of these mares are in the liver breeders club and they're both red duns, but they look very different. One's so light I wouldn't have considered DP at all. Is this a het vs homozygous case, or are other genes at play affecting color?

http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=342244 -
I think it's just the Dun acting differently. Plus the top one is flaxen, which affects the mane and tail, and changes the feeling of the picture more than one might think. :P
Looking at it a little more, there might be a chance of Homozygousy in the second one, but I don't know Dun livers as well. Anyone? -
Hmm that's interesting. I wonder what variations of a homozygous dun look like in comparison. Thanks for the input!
-
I'm guessing the second dun may be DP DP. Now I'm curious. Searching Liver Red Dun now...

Ok, so these two both have parents that appear to be or are definitely DP carriers. They are both darker than I would expect a 3 darkening gen liver red dun to be, so based on this I suspect that the second mare you posted may be DP DP....if I'm right, as long as you breed her to sooty red based stallions, every one of her foals will be liver. If you breed her to liver stallions, some of her foals may be what is called "black chestnut" when they have all 4 darkening genes. That's what is going on with the red based Freaky Friday horses--they are such a dark red they look black! -
Here is the search I used. Interesting to see all the shades and combinations that are liver red duns.

@@rose and Cheers okay that helped clear things up a bit, I focus my attention I it later when I have a better understanding of genes in general.
My freaky Friday mare did have a black tobiano filly this season
Its all very interesting and I can't wait to learn more and understand it better. Might try my hand at a DP line later on----
Barn ID 4953 -
That's pretty cool! I've been planning next season's matchmaking with a Freaky Friday stud in mind - so many choices and not enough stalls...
I need a black chestnut dun in my future -
I have this mare who I think is het for DP but I dont know for sure cause Ive only gotten 2 maybe 3 het dp foals from her when bred to a freaky friday stallion.

Adding onto the list of DP carriers, I'll post a few examples in my herd. I also got a liver red dun foundation mare which was quite the surprise when I noticed.
At least 1 copy of DP, maybe two (dam is suspected DP carrier) + Cream.
1 Copy DP
1 Copy DP + StySty
1 Copy DP + Cream
1 Copy DP + StySty
2 Copy DP + StySty (She was spayed *cries*)

I can't see it? Never mind. Clicked open in new tab and it showed up
-
Yep. Dena, the Visual Aids Queen!
-
Can anyone (@Abbey Road [or others]) show me some champagne's with DP if possible?
-
From what I understand, champagnes with DP are hard to recognize. I know I can't pick them out of my horses with any sense of certainty . I have one that, through breeding, I can confirm is het for DP.
FR Gold Charm SX
I plan on breeding more next season, so I hope to have more examples! -
Yeah, the lighter colors get very hard. Even I have a hard time telling those. Looking back in the family tree is your best bet and test breeding. It gets even worse when your dealing with colors like Perlino and such lol
-
@blu
Here is a search for offspring of my old stallion Red King filtered for Champagnes. All of these guys are at least het for DP.

DivineDreams, your foal could be DP, the sire is a Rhythm of Four which is one of the rank specials that guarantees het DP. It is hard to tell for sure though, since your foal is brown (Ata in the gene test) and that makes her very dark even without DP. Someone who breeds DP browns might be able to tell, but since I only breed DP chestnuts, I haven't trained my eye to spot it in bays and browns.
To answer your other question, all horses whose color name is liver chestnut that appear black are homozygous DP. True black hoses (E_aa) may or may not have DP and there is no way to tell unless they are Freaky Fridays, have a homozygous DP parent, or produce a visibly DP foal from a non DP mate.I was jllewis on the old forum.

I'm not sure by brown if you mean they have brown in their name or that they just carry At so here is what I personally have.
Here is one of mine she is ee aAt CC dd gg ff SstySsty pp WF: None and het DP

This horse was DP DP Ssty Ssty At At. He's also W8 so you can't see a ton of his color....but all of his offspring are at least DP dp Ssty S and some have further darkening genes.

I suspect this girl may be DP DP. But I could be wrong. She is definitely At a DP _ Ssty Ssty.

Is that everything you were looking for, Jordan? You can see how much of a difference At At vs At a makes on browns....
-
Yep :) thanks guys. Unpopular opinion but browns are my favorites on the game. I love just classic browns with sooty & DP. Sooty+ makes them even better.Owner Of Bellwether Farm

Not an unpopular opinion at all. I know quite a few players who breed brown extensively! I used to have a major brown line myself but decided to head towards the other two Agouti genes primarily this time around, though I still have brown on one of my GP colts and have stocked a ton of Yule Log mares for that pasture, so hopefully I will have all 3 colors running around in gen 3!
-
I prosperously breed for At in my GP line because I wanted bays with the long black socks that come with them. I'm hoping to possibly breed some homo At bays out of that line. My reason though is to try and recreate an old gelding I use to have.
-
I really like the brown horses with DP as well. I don't breed for any specific colors (other than no gray), I tried at first but I just ended up mixing my different colored lines so I decided not to bother. My herd is just a mix of all different colors and patterns. I do love it when a pretty dark brown pops up though!

I was such a baby to the game when I started this thread! Its so funny to see it brought back to life lol
